Free Bee Swarm Removal Goleta

Here was an interesting swarm... on the ground!  A Goleta resident noticed a pancake of bees in front of his house and called  to have them removed.  I did a quick inspection and the bees seemed healthy. I didn't notice mites on the drones or the bees having any other trouble. After poking around the mass for a moment we found the queen so I placed the nuc box in front of the bees and they rushed right for the entrance.  After 20 minutes or so, the bees were in the box and ready to go home.

Bee Hive Removal Santa Barbara

This happened to be one of our easier removals of the season, even though this hive had been in this two-sided gate for several years.  As we moved through the comb, it was evident that the hive had recently swarmed and not yet come back to full strength.  There was some new brood present, just not in large numbers for a typical hive this size.  Most of the empty cells were being filled with honey. We cut the comb and hung it on 8 frames and placed it all in the box.  A day after the heavy rains, the bees were very active acclimating to their new surroundings.

The piece of wood on the ground enclosed the interior of the gate.
The hive entrance was a small opening used for the gate lock.

Bee Hive Removal Montecito

Here is a full removal - a bit complex since the hive was located so high up.  We had to set-up a full scaffold to reach all the way to the upper reaches of the hive.  This was a hive that was several seasons old.  Just the season prior the same structure had a large hive just to the right edge which was exterminated.  We're happy that we had a chance to remove this one!

Free Bee Swarm Removal Santa Barbara

This was the second swarm in as many days from a feral hive in a large tree (see post below for 1st swarm).  The owners called about the second set of bees, this time on the net for hitting balls into...

Bee Swarm Removal Santa Barbara

Here's a nice sized swarm, probably at least 3.5 lbs by weight once it was off the rail.  It was cool and the bees were balled up for the evening and very gentle.  The best part of this removal was that the kids are getting very comfortable around bees.

Bee Hive Removal Goleta

Here's another bait hive.  This hive was in the trunk of an old eucalyptus tree.  This particular eucalyptus tree is on the property of our local Goleta beach resort and approximately 15 feet from their new event/wedding venue (with a great ocean view!).  The bees had to go, but the decision makers for the resort didn't want to cut the tree down or kill the bees.  The bait hive was set-up to remove the bees so that the new venue will be ready for guests in the late spring or early summer.

Another hive in another great location.  I still wonder if
bees (like people) prefer ocean and mountain views.

Santa Barbara Bee Removal

This was a hive that had established itself in the roof space above the bathroom of an old cottage.  We were able to access the hive by taking off only one board panel.  The removal was aided by the fact that the insulation kept the hive from spreading out too much.  You can count 8 combs in the photo, each was about 18 inches in length.  There were another 4-5 smaller comb sheets to the left that are out of view.  The owner wasn't sure how long the hive had been present, most likely 6+ months.

Bee Removal - Santa Barbara

This is a typical bait hive project to remove bees that entered through the attic vent.  This particular hive could be viewed through the access panel in the hallway, but there was no way to get to them as a result of the cross beams. A cone is placed over the hive entrance so the bees can exit, but not re-enter their hive.  The bees will be absorbed by the small 5-frame nuc hive placed just under the cone.
